This piece is the esquisse of one of "Four Seasons of East Hokkaido" composed of 4 sculptures (Spring by Yasutake Funakoshi, Summer by Churyo Sato, Autumn by Yoshitatsu Yanagihara, Winter by Shin Hongo) which are installed on the Nusamai Bridge in Kushiro, Hokkaido. While that in Hokkaido is lightly dressed, this is nude. Funakoshi is good at neat and elegant woman statue. This innocent young girl who stands casually and naturally is just right for the theme "Spring".

Yasutake Funakoshi

Born in Iwate in 1912. He graduated from Tokyo Fine Arts School (present Tokyo University of the Arts) Sculpture Department in 1939 and took part in the founding of the sculpture department in Shinseisakuha Association and became a member of it. He was a pious Catholic and created a lot of religious pieces including "the memorial monument of Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Nagasaki". His style is concise, neat and poetic.
