Emilio Greco is a representative great master of modern Italian representational sculpture. He is one of the popular sculptors introduced relatively early in Japan. His work is characterized by its unique pose; "seated woman" is his main theme of sculpture. This piece, one of the series of seated statues, is successfully given nervousness and vitality by the unnatural pose at a glance.
Born in Sicily, Italy in 1913. He quit school for his father's disease and learned the rough carving of marble as a disciple of a gravestone sculpture studio. When he participated in the Quadriennale in Rome in 1943, the National Museum of Modern Art purchased his terra cotta work. Since then he won a lot of prizes in various international contests and held exhibitions many times also in Japan. He passed away in 1995.
